We pulled 37 homepages from the Wayback Machine, website builders, landing page builders and scrollytelling tools, one per year since 2019, and counted every “AI”. Here is how a whole industry rewrote its pitch.
July 2019. We open the homepages of 37 builders in the Wayback Machine, 18 for websites, 10 for landing pages and 9 for scrollytelling, and count every “AI”.
There are 2. Wix has something close: ADI, “Artificial Design Intelligence”, a setup wizard it names 3 times without ever spelling out the A‑I.
Unbounce becomes the first to put AI in its headline: “our latest AI feature, Smart Traffic”. It is the only builder selling it on purpose for the next two years.
Still quiet. 4 mentions across 37 homepages. Drag‑and‑drop, templates and “no code” do the selling.
Five months before ChatGPT, 4 of 37 builders say AI, 16 times in all. 13 of those are Unbounce. The 18 website builders say it once between them (Wix), and the scrollytelling tools not at all.
ChatGPT launched in November. By July, 10 builders say AI, 62 times. Framer’s headline reads “Start your dream site with AI”, and IONOS, Elementor, Instapage, Wix and Leadpages follow.
17 of 37, 157 mentions. IONOS goes to 38. Landingi, HubSpot, GoDaddy, Duda, Turtl, Webnode, Ceros and Mailchimp join, Wix drops “ADI” for good, and Framer takes AI back out of its headline.
24 of 37, 295 mentions. The holdouts give in: Squarespace, Webflow, Swipe Pages, Tilda, Foleon, WordPress.com and Genially.
July 2026: 28 of 37, 540 mentions. Wishpond, Vev, Jimdo and Shopify join. Vev goes from none to 24 in a year, and 7 builders now say AI in the headline itself, Shopify’s “Be the next AI all-star” among them.
November 2026. 31 of 37 builders say AI, 570 times. Zoho Sites went from none to 23 this autumn. Shorthand says it once.
Mentions of “AI” on each homepage now, menus included. The small number is July 2022. Greyed builders aren’t in the totals because there is no readable 2022 page to compare with.
1331 mentions, July 2022 → now
15168 mentions, July 2022 → now
071 mentions, July 2022 → now
Hostinger asks the Wayback Machine not to archive its pages, so it has today’s count only. Canva and Readymag only render with JavaScript, so there is no text to count in the archive.
The whole homepage, as the Wayback Machine kept it. Scroll inside each page. The yellow marks are ours. The number is what we counted in the page text; a screenshot can show a few more or fewer marks, because some parts of a page only appear once its scripts run.

Tools for long-form, scroll-driven stories sell to editors, brand teams and communicators, and for years they stayed out of it. In July 2022 none of the 9 said AI. Today they say it 71 times between them, 53 of those added since July 2025. Vev went from none to 23, and Shorthand still says it once. Its headline is about speed instead: “Your digital storytelling is stuck in production”.
Scrollytelling, the tool that made this page, is counted with the AI-native builders below, because it launched as an AI builder.
If AI took over, you would expect “drag and drop” and “templates” to fade. They didn’t. Homepages got longer and kept every old promise, then added AI.
Totals across the same 37 homepages, July 2022 and now.
In July 2022 the 37 builders said “agent” not once. Now they say it 99 times. Framer says “agent” 39 times and “AI” only 17: its headline is “Framer is the pro website builder with a world-class design agent”. Webflow calls itself “the agentic web platform”, and HubSpot’s landing page builder says “agent” 13 times.
Builders that are nothing but AI don’t need to say so. Bolt and v0 open with a question and a prompt box.
Scrollytelling is on this list too, and we say it 16 times. Fair.

Years are early-July snapshots. “Now” is the latest capture from the last 60 days, or the live page on 3 November 2026 when the archive has none. – means no readable page: not archived, blocked from the archive, or a page that only renders with JavaScript.
For each builder we took the homepage, or the builder’s own page where the company sells more than one product (GoDaddy, IONOS, Hostinger, Zoho, Canva, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Esri), as the Wayback Machine captured it closest to 1 July of each year, plus the newest capture from the last 60 days. Where a capture was empty or not in English, we used the nearest readable capture. Genially was genial.ly until 2023, so its earlier years come from that address.
We count “AI” as a whole word in capitals, so “AI-powered” and “Wix AI” count but “maintain” doesn’t, plus “A.I.”, “GenAI” and “artificial intelligence” in any case. We count the text a browser would show, menus and tabs included, not scripts or hidden code. The screenshots show the same pages with our highlights added.
Data: website-builders-ai.csv, one row per builder and snapshot, with dates and Wayback Machine links. Free under CC BY 4.0. Updated 3 November 2026.
15 of the 18 website builders we tracked mention AI on their homepage today, against 1 in July 2022. Across all 37 website, landing page and scrollytelling builders it is 31 of 37, and 570 mentions against 16.
IONOS, Elementor and Squarespace: 76, 36 and 34 mentions on their homepages. Hostinger, which isn’t in the archive, has 76. Weebly, SITE123, Carrd, Systeme.io, ArcGIS StoryMaps and Pageflow don’t mention it at all.
Mostly in 2023, right after ChatGPT. Unbounce was early (2020); Wix sold an “ADI” design assistant from 2019 to 2023 before switching to “AI”. Squarespace, Webflow and WordPress.com waited until 2025, and most scrollytelling tools until 2025 or 2026.
Less than anyone else. In July 2022 none of them mentioned AI. Today: Vev 23, Turtl 14, Ceros 9, Foleon 9, Flourish 9, Genially 6, Shorthand 1, ArcGIS StoryMaps 0, Pageflow 0.
We downloaded each homepage from the Wayback Machine once a year (early July) and counted “AI” as a whole, capitalised word in the page text, plus “A.I.”, “GenAI” and “artificial intelligence”. Words like “maintain” or “Aim” don’t count. Menus and tabs are included, so the count is higher than what fits on one screen.
